Blood collection must be performed in a manner that will not result in harm to the patient or the phlebotomist, nor affect the integrity of the sample and accuracy of test results. This module introduces participants to venipuncture using the evacuated tube system and the syringe system, using both conventional needles and winged infusion sets.

Objectives: The Venipuncture Procedure
1. Describe the appropriate steps involved in drawing blood from a vein using the evacuated system.
2. Describe the situations in which using a winged infusion device for venipuncture is appropriate.
3. Describe the appropriate steps involved in drawing blood from a vein using a winged infusion set with the evacuated system and with a syringe.
4. Describe the procedure to transfer blood from a syringe to blood tube(s) using a safety transfer device.
Evaluation:
At the end of each unit, there is a practice activity to help participants apply their knowledge and assess their learning.
Following completion of all the units in each module, there is an exam that each course participant must challenge and successfully complete with a passing grade of 80%.
Course Duration
The course is self paced so course duration will depend on the individual participant and their prior knowledge base with the course subject matter. On average, the course will take between 1-1.5 hours to complete each unit.
